Where to start, what system do I need?
1. You need to know what you expect from the system,
a) if you would like to save money then a grid tied system without batteries is the answer as the cost of batteries makes the system expensive.
b) if you would like to have power when Eskom is down then then a hybrid system with lithium ion batteries is the solution.
Who saves the most ?
Industrial, commercial production and manufacturing sectors are the best suited, as their peak usage is also when the solar system produces the most power. With residential systems the greatest usage is in the mornings and evenings when there is no or very little production of power , thus storage(batteries)is required which makes the system expensive per kW.
How important is Efficiency?
Considering the cost per kW, becoming more efficient saves you a lot of money. Installation of LED lighting solutions, solar or heat pump water heating and reducing your peak demand by installing soft starters/VSD's or a staggered startup system is step one. Efficiency should be more cost effective than increasing solar system size.
